Honestly gotta disagree here. Running lines through fire blocks is one of those things where quick tricks usually cause more problems than they solve.

Wait, are you saying you've actually seen someone try to run wire through a fire block without drilling it properly? Cause that sounds like a recipe for a fire hazard down the road. I get that people want to avoid breaking out the tools, but a half-assed job there seems way worse than just taking the time to do it right.
