My trainer in Tulsa convinced me to wrap my climbing rope around my belt instead of a ladder belt, and I'm still not sure who was right
I was doing a 30 foot pole run in Tulsa last month and a guy with 20 years in the trade told me to ditch the ladder belt and just loop my rope around the base of the strand, said it saves time and your back. I did it for about 3 houses and my foreman caught me, made me redo all 3 the right way, and wrote me up for it. So my question is, has anyone else been taught this shortcut and does it ever actually work, or was this guy just trying to get me in trouble?
That "saves time and your back" line is exactly what some old timer told me my first year out too, and yeah I tried it for like half a day before my journeyman about lost his mind. The thing is it does feel faster and easier in the moment, I'll give the guy that, because you're not fighting the belt and you can just lean back on the rope. But it's a free climb basically, nothing's actually holding you if you slip, and the belt rule exists because guys have died learning that lesson the hard way. Getting written up and having to redo 3 houses sucks but your foreman did you a solid, honestly, because that shortcut works right up until the one time it doesn't.
