I finally broke down and bought a $400 thermal camera for my truck
It seemed like a crazy amount for a tool I wasn't sure I'd use much. But last month, I found a hot spot in a wall that saved me from drilling right into a live wire the homeowner didn't even know was there. That one find paid for the camera and kept me from a real bad day. Anyone else find a 'luxury' tool that turned out to be a total lifesaver?

Read about that happening with a plumber too...

My friend had a plumber fix a small leak and got a bill for a whole new pipe system. The guy just kept finding "problems" once he was in the house. She had to get a second opinion to shut it down.

That "someone kept finding problems" thing is exactly what I've heard too. @the_elizabeth your friend's plumber story is the kind of thing that makes people real cautious about trusting anyone who comes to fix something. I read a whole article about how some tradespeople will spot one small issue and then start inventing bigger problems to justify a bigger bill. It's a shame because there are honest folks out there, but stories like hers make everyone suspicious. A second opinion is pretty much mandatory now for any job over a few hundred bucks in my book.
