Overheard a client in Portland call our custom work 'just furniture'
I was picking up a check for a built-in bookcase job and the homeowner was on the phone. She said, 'Yeah, they're done, it's just some custom furniture.' It wasn't mean, but it felt like she didn't get the planning that went into it. We spent three weeks on the joinery and finish to match her old trim. How do you guys talk about the value of the work without sounding like you're bragging?

Ugh, that stings. I get it completely. I started adding a single "process" photo to the final invoice, like a close-up of that perfect joint or the stain match. Lets the work speak for itself. Aaron708 is onto something with showing value early, but sometimes they only see it after. A quick picture with a note like "This is why it took three weeks" can be a quiet reminder without saying a word.

Man that's a tough one to hear. It really does feel like they're missing the whole point of the craft. Maybe the trick is to show the value before you even start the job, like with photos of the process. Pointing out the matching details in a walkthrough can help them see it's not just a thing you bought.
