Old timer at the lumber yard in Tulsa said my face frames were too wide, and he was right
I was building face frames at 2.5 inches on some oak cabinets last month because that's what I saw in a magazine once. A guy named Ray who has been at the yard in Tulsa for like 30 years looked at my drawings and said flat out, "You're wasting half a board and they'll look clunky next to standard doors." I dropped them down to 1.5 inches on the next batch and ran the rails and stiles through my shaper the same way, and the boxes came out looking way cleaner. Also saved me almost a full board foot on each cabinet, which adds up on a 12 box kitchen. What width are you all running for standard overlay frames, or am I the only one who had this wrong?
1.5 is the move for standard overlay, Ray knew what he was talking about. I ran 2 inch frames for years until a cabinet guy told me the same thing and it was like a light went on. You get a cleaner reveal against the door edge and the wider frame just eats up stock for no reason. Twelve boxes is a real chunk of oak you saved there.
