Just realized I've built 47 drawer boxes this winter and still can't get the bottoms to stop rattling
I counted them last night while cleaning the shop. Forty seven drawer boxes since November, all dovetailed, all the same jig setup I've used for years. But three of them came back from customers saying the bottom panel rattles when the drawer slides shut. Turns out my dado stack had drifted about a hair narrow and I never caught it because I was moving too fast. Checked the last batch with a feeler gauge and 6 out of 12 were loose. How do you guys keep from burning through a run without stopping to recheck your setups?
Used to figure the jig is set so it stays set, that's the whole point of a jig. Then I had a run of 30 cabinet doors come back with gaps you could see daylight through because a setscrew worked loose a little at a time and I never noticed. Now I cut a test piece every ten parts, no matter how good the setup feels. Sounds slow until you add up the cost of a redo, and a rattle call from a customer costs way more than ten seconds at the saw. Feelers are cheap and they don't lie to you even when you're in a hurry.
