I used a $20 shelf pin jig wrong for 5 years, a YouTube comment fixed it last Tuesday

Bought one of those plastic shelf pin jigs back in 2019 from a big box store. Always drilled my holes with the little collar on top, never thought twice. Last Tuesday I'm prepping a built-in for a client in Columbus and I see this comment on a random assembly video: flip the jig so the collar sits on the bottom. That way the drill bit stops at the same depth every hole. Tried it on a scrap piece. Every hole identical, no wobble, no re-drilling. Had been shimming and fudging my shelf pins for years because of that one dumb mistake. Anyone else got a basic tool trick that took them way too long to stumble on?

Buddy of mine spent two years fighting with a circular saw guide before someone at a jobsite showed him he had the clamp on backwards. Same energy as this, just staring at the thing going "why does this never work right" every single time.
