Guy at the lumber yard in Dayton told me he quit building face frames with pocket screws 6 months ago, only uses dowels now | Cabinetmakers - nhfree.com
Did he say why he made the switch? In my experience dowels are great for strength and they hold up over time, but they slow you way down if you're building a lot of frames. I ran dowels on a kitchen job once and my setup time doubled compared to pocket screws, though the joints were cleaner for sure. If he's doing one off stuff or high end work, dowels make sense, but for production runs pocket screws still win on speed. Your mileage may vary depending on what kind of shop he's running.
