Cherry picking a bundle, are we breaking the unwritten rule?

Last Tuesday I saw a post in the group where this lady listed a big box of mixed craft supplies, like yarn, glue sticks, and some random fabric. I only wanted the yarn for a blanket project, so I commented asking if I could just grab that part. She messaged me back saying it was all or nothing, which made me wonder if that's standard etiquette. Then someone else posted a comment that people who cherry pick are why givers stop posting here, and that got me thinking. On one hand, taking only what you need keeps useful stuff out of the landfill, and it leaves the rest for someone else. On the other hand, I get that sorting and coordinating with five different people is a pain for the giver. What do you all do when you only need one item from a bundle, do you ask or just take the whole lot and re-gift the rest?
