Appreciation post: my spice cabinet went from 40 jars to 6 thanks to the free shelf at the library
Used to hoard every half-empty jar until the cabinet wouldn't shut, then last month I dropped a box at the swap shelf in the Maplewood library lobby and kept just the 6 I use weekly. Weirdly I cook more now since I can find the cumin in two seconds, and a neighbor grabbed my extra paprika the same day. Has anyone else cut their pantry down this far and regretted it later?
Heard a cookbook author on a podcast say most people use fewer than ten spices on a regular basis and the rest just sit there. Keeping the six you actually reach for makes sense since you can see them all and grab what you need. The swap shelf is a smart way to let the extras find a new home instead of going bad in the back of a cabinet.
