Update: my $15 flea market handsaw cut straighter than the $80 one from the big box store
Spent 20 minutes fighting the new saw through a 2x4 last weekend in my garage, then grabbed the old rusty one and it went through like soft butter. Is it the tooth count, the set, or am I just holding the cheap ones wrong?

Did you check the tooth count on both saws side by side? A 2x4 is only 1.5 inches thick, so even a 10 point saw should rip through it in a few strokes if the teeth are sharp and the set is right. My guess is the $80 saw has hardened teeth that feel dull out of the box while the old one has been sharpened a few times and cuts way better.
