The $8 sharpening stone that made me trash my $80 knife set
A chef at a diner in Portland told me my "premium" kitchen knives were actually garbage because I was using a pull-through sharpener. He handed me his cheap King 1000/6000 whetstone and showed me how to use it in about 5 minutes. Now I spend maybe $15 total on a stone every couple years and my $30 Kiwi knives cut better than anything from a box set. Has anyone else had their mind changed by a random stranger about something you thought you had figured out?

Oh man, this is so true. I had basically the same thing happen to me with sharpening - I was using one of those pull-through V gadgets for years and thought I was doing great. Then a buddy at a camping trip showed me how he just used a simple wet stone on his old Mora knife, and I couldn't believe the difference. It's wild how those cheap stones from the hardware store can make any knife feel way more expensive if you take a few minutes to learn the angle. Your mileage may vary, but I've been hooked on stones ever since, and my wallet is definitely happier.

Yeah I read the same thing on a bushcraft forum, totally changed how I sharpen too.

Is a sharp knife really that big of a deal though? Like yeah it cuts better but most people just chop stuff up fine with whatever. Seems like a lot of fuss over something that takes an extra second of sawing.
