PSA: My $8 thrift store cast iron pan has outlasted 3 nonstick pans I bought new
Got it at a Goodwill in Tacoma about 6 years ago. Just a plain skillet, no name brand on it, looked like it had been through a war. I almost didn't grab it because the handle was rusty. Scrubbed it down with steel wool, seasoned it in the oven, and that thing has been my main pan ever since. Meanwhile I've gone through 3 nonstick pans in that same stretch. The coatings flaked off, handles got loose, one warped so bad it spun on the burner. My wife thought I was nuts for cooking eggs in the cast iron at first. Now she won't use anything else. The nonstick pans cost me maybe $90 total across all 3. The cast iron was $8 and a little elbow grease. What's the oldest piece of gear you own that you got used?
That line about the handle being rusty hits home, I passed on a Wagner skillet for 5 bucks once because of rust and I still kick myself. Rust on cast iron is nothing, it's surface stuff, steel wool and a soak in vinegar water takes it right off and the metal under it is fine. Same deal with the ones that look like they went through a war, that black crust is half the reason they cook so good. My daily pan came from a garage sale for 3 dollars and my kids will probably fight over it someday.
