My favorite kitchen knife failed after 12 years of daily use

I bought a Victorinox chef's knife back in 2012 from a restaurant supply store in Portland. Last month I noticed the blade started chipping after I sharpened it, which never happened before. I think the steel just gave out from all those years of cutting on plastic boards. Has anyone else had a good knife suddenly stop holding an edge after a long time?

Oh man, that's a bummer. It's weird how things we use every day just sort of wear out in their own time, isn't it? I've noticed this with tools in general, like they have a hidden lifetime that's longer than the warranty but shorter than you'd hope. Your Victorinox gave you a solid run, but steel fatigue is real, especially after a decade of daily abuse on plastic boards.

@michael_craig its crazy how much truth there is to that hidden lifetime thing. Ive been noticing it with all sorts of stuff lately, not just tools but even furniture and electronics. You buy something thinking itll last forever and then one day it just gives up on you right when you need it most. Its like everything has this quiet clock ticking away inside. That steel fatigue you mentioned makes total sense though, daily use just wears everything down no matter how good the brand is. Kinda makes you stop and think about what actually lasts versus what just looks like it will.
