Guy at the counter told me I was ruining my cast iron skillet

I always scrubbed my cast iron with soap and water after cooking, thought that was fine. A customer in my store told me I was stripping all the seasoning off and that I should just use salt and a paper towel. Tried it for a month and the difference is night and day, food slides right off now. Anyone else get set straight by a random stranger on their gear care?

Heard you but I gotta push back on this one. I've been using soap and water on my Lodge skillet for years and it's fine as long as you dry it right away and rub a tiny bit of oil on it after. The whole "never use soap" thing is from when soap had lye in it back in the day. Modern dish soap won't strip your seasoning if you're not scrubbing like a maniac.

Wait hold on wait. @terry_barnes you really wash your Lodge with soap and water? Like full on dish soap and scrub it down? I'm honestly shook right now because I've been terrified to even look at mine wrong since I got it two years ago. My grandma would roll over in her grave if she heard someone admitting to this lol. I mean I know technically you're right about the lye thing but I still can't bring myself to do it. I just use hot water and a chainmail scrubber and call it a day. But now I'm wondering if I've been missing out on an easier clean this whole time.
