A guy at a Seattle REI repair counter showed me his 12 year old pack with zero stitching fixes, and it got me thinking about zippers
I was at the REI in Seattle getting a zipper replaced on my daypack and the repair guy pulled out his own pack from 2012 to show me something. He said the fabric was fine after all those trips but he had replaced the zipper slider three times because that is always the first thing to go. He told me most people toss a whole bag when really only a $4 part failed. Now I am wondering if I should be looking at which zipper brand a pack uses before I buy it, instead of just the fabric and warranty. Does anyone here check zipper specs when they shop, or am I overthinking this?
Check the zipper brand before you buy, it actually matters more than people realize. YKK is the gold standard and most bags that last forever use them, while no-name zippers on cheap packs are usually the first thing to fail. Replacing a slider is cheap and easy but replacing the whole zipper track is a pain, so it pays to look at that little pull tab before you drop money on a bag.
