Had to pick between two beef suppliers and the losing one showed up at my shop
So I run a small butcher shop in Boise and I was down to two options for my weekly beef order, the same ranch I had used for 4 years or a new guy who was $80 cheaper per quarter cow. I went with the cheaper guy because margins are tight and I figured how different could it be. The meat came in looking fine but the marbling was thin and two customers asked me why the ribeyes looked off. Then the old ranch owner walked in on a Friday to buy sausage and saw the new guy's label on my case, and he just smiled and said "guess you found your answer." Has anyone else had a supplier switch blow up in their face like this?
Watched this same thing play out with a roofer buddy of mine. He swapped his shingle guy for a cheaper crew, saved a few grand, then spent the next two springs going back to fix leaks on the same houses. The old supplier never said a word, just kept sending Christmas cards. That smile you got from the ranch owner says it all. Cheaper almost always means something got cut, you just don't see where until later. And the guy who lost your business knows exactly where it got cut, that's why he smiled.
