Showerthought: The lady at the library checkout desk saw my dot grid and showed me her 20 year old journal
I was checking out a book on hand lettering at the downtown library when the woman at the desk noticed my dot grid notebook sticking out of my bag. She pulled a worn black journal from her own tote, flipped to a page from 2004, and showed me how she tracked migraines with a simple dot chart instead of writing full sentences. She said she stopped using fancy spreads after her third kid because the logging itself became the point, not making it pretty. I went home and cut my weekly layout from two pages down to half a page and honestly my logging went way up. Does anyone else keep their layouts dead simple because of something an older journaler told them?
Wow, but simple is not always better and that librarian is just one person with one story. Fancy spreads might take more time but they make you sit with your thoughts longer, which is kind of the whole point of journaling. Cutting things down to half a page sounds efficient, sure, but you might be losing the slow part that actually helps you think.
