My friend's 'bullet journal' is just a list of chores on a napkin

She showed me her 'system' yesterday, which was literally three things scribbled on a diner napkin from The Griddle Cafe, and called it bullet journaling. I tried to explain it's about the method of rapid logging and future planning, not just writing stuff down anywhere. How do you gently correct someone who thinks any to-do list counts?

Honestly it's more about the system than the notebook. My sister did the same thing and I just sent her the official bullet journal website, it clicked for her after that. Maybe it's just me but sometimes people need to see the method spelled out.

Yeah but the system can feel super rigid to some people lol. My friend tried following the official site and got stressed about doing it "right." She had way more fun once she just used a regular notebook and made her own symbols. Sometimes the method needs to bend to fit the person, not the other way around.

Oh man, I had a friend who was exactly like that with bullet journals. She got so overwhelmed by the official method that she gave up and just started scribbling in a spiral notebook with her own random symbols. It worked for her for a few months but then she kept forgetting what her symbols meant and the whole thing fell apart. I finally sat her down with the official guide and she was like "oh, this actually makes sense now" after hating it for so long. Idk, sometimes the system just needs a second try to click.
