Just counted and I've filled 27 notebooks since I started bullet journaling in 2017.

That stack of used-up journals on my shelf is a physical timeline of my entire adult life, from college finals to my first apartment to planning my wedding, and it hit me harder than any photo album ever could.

That "physical timeline" idea got me. I've got maybe three half filled ones from the same time. My timeline is mostly grocery lists and pages where I practiced writing my signature in different styles like a bored teenager.

My 2018 bullet journal has a two page spread about the best way to organize a sock drawer. I get the sentimental value, but sometimes a notebook is just a tool for getting through the week without forgetting milk. The pressure to make every list into some deep life record is what made me stop doing it for a while. It feels like we're supposed to perform our planning for an audience, even if that audience is just our future self. My grocery lists from 2019 don't tell a story, they just remind me I bought too much cilantro.
