I finally stopped trying to be artistic with my journal
I spent months trying to draw fancy headers and spread layouts. Then I saw someone post their bare bones weekly spread with just a pen and a ruler, and it hit me that the whole point is tracking stuff, not making art. Has anyone else just given up on making theirs look pretty?

It's like how everyone suddenly started making sourdough during lockdown. All that effort for bread you eat in ten minutes. Same with bullet journals. People spend hours on a weekly spread then never actually write anything in it. I know a girl who buys all the Tombow markers and washi tape but her journal is just blank pages with pretty covers. Meanwhile my dad tracks his blood pressure in a spiral notebook from the drugstore. Works fine. The ritual beats the decoration every time.

Pretty hard disagree here. That artistic stuff is what actually got me to open my journal every day for the first time in years. If it's just a list of tasks in a boring notebook, I can do that in my phone's notes app and save the cash. There's something about mixing a little creativity with practical planning that makes it stick.
