I bought a $40 'perfect' bullet journal kit and it made me hate the whole thing

The kit came with a notebook, stencils, and a bunch of pens that smeared on the paper, which totally killed my flow. I wasted the money and felt so much pressure to make it look 'right' that I stopped using it for two months. Has anyone else had a bad experience with a pre-made kit that made journaling feel like a chore?

Yeah, I hear you. Those kits are basically a trap. @benreed, I've tried different paper and it didn't fix the smearing problem, the pens themselves were just junk. The whole setup screams "you must be creative this exact way" and it kills any real desire to write. I just use a cheap spiral notebook and a Pilot G2 now. Way less pressure, way more fun.

Yeah, the pressure to make it look "right" is real. My friend got a fancy calligraphy set and the ink bled through every page. She spent more time cleaning up smudges than actually writing, and the whole thing just lived in a drawer after that.

Did she ever try different paper, or just give up on it?
