Appreciation post: my old art teacher said to leave the first page blank, and I fought her on it
Back in 2019 I started my first journal and my teacher Bev in Lansing told me to never touch page one, and I rolled my eyes because who wastes a whole page. Three books later I finally get it, because that first page is where I put my keys, yearly dates, and the phone numbers I always lose. Do you all use page one for an index, a quote, or nothing at all?
My buddy Dave had the same fight with his art teacher years ago and he just drew a big dumb skull on page one to prove her wrong, which he regretted about a week later when he needed somewhere to write down his meds and his landlord's number. Now he keeps a whole two pages up front, one for the index and one for stuff like passwords hint and birthdays. The funny part is he told me last month that the blank page almost works like a warm up, just staring at all that empty space before you mess it up. Bev was onto something real and neither of us wanted to hear it back then. Now I do a table of contents and a little quote at the bottom, keeps me from flipping through fifty pages hunting for a note.
