Warning: my $40 monthly grocery budget blew up because I forgot one recurring charge
I set up a $40 weekly grocery budget back in January and tracked every receipt for 3 months, then somehow forgot my Amazon Subscribe and Save order of $32 for coffee and paper towels was still running on the same card. When I finally checked my statement on a Tuesday, I had already blown past my month by $78 without noticing. Lesson here is to list every auto-ship and subscription on one sheet next to your budget before you pat yourself on the back for staying under. Has anyone else had a hidden recurring charge quietly wreck a budget they thought was working?
Put every subscription you have on a sticky note on your fridge and check it the first of every month. I got hit by the same thing last year, a $15 streaming charge I forgot about because it came out of PayPal and not my bank card. Go through your statements for the last two months and highlight anything that repeats, then cancel or move it to a card you actually watch. I also set phone reminders for the days my auto-ships hit so nothing sneaks past me anymore.
