Venting about the week my grocery budget blew up by $80

Last Wednesday I went in for just milk and eggs at the Kroger on Main St, walked out $80 lighter because I panicked at the rising prices and stocked up on canned goods. Did anyone else have that one random day where your list completely derailed your monthly plan?

My buddy Dave went to Aldi last Tuesday for bread and peanut butter, ended up buying a whole flat of canned tomatoes and a giant bag of onions because he saw the shelf was half empty. He texted me a photo of his trunk later with this defeated look on his face saying he spent $65 on stuff he didn't even need that week. Next day his wife sent him back to return half of it. Said the manager just laughed and told him "you and half the neighborhood, man.

Call me crazy but I actually respect Dave's panic buy. When you see bare shelves at a discount grocer it triggers something primal like hey maybe the supply chain really is about to snap this time. $65 on emergency onions and tomatoes is basically cheap insurance against a future where you can't even get canned goods.

Man that sucks, I feel for you. I did the same thing last month at the Food Lion on Oak Street when I saw the pasta aisle looking picked over. Ended up with $50 worth of spaghetti sauce and dried beans I didn't really need, just sitting in my pantry now staring at me. It's like your brain just short circuits when you see those empty spots, makes you feel like you gotta grab everything while you can.
