That 1% banking fee stat finally got me to switch

I read a study on NerdWallet that said the average person pays $240 a year just in monthly maintenance fees. That number hit me hard because I was paying $12 a month to a big bank for years without thinking about it. I finally moved my checking to a local credit union in Portland last month and they charge zero fees. Even got a small bonus for opening the account with $500. Has anyone else found a hidden fee in their statements that added up way more than you expected?

haha yeah my old bank hit me with a $35 "paper statement fee" every month because I didn't switch to digital. like I'm paying them for the privilege of them mailing me junk mail.

Honestly I gotta push back on that "junk mail" thing. You're paying $35 a month because you chose not to switch to digital, that's on you. Banks have been screaming for years that paper costs them money, paper, ink, postage, sorting machines. They're not doing it to be mean, they're just passing along the actual cost. Tbh if you don't want the fee just go paperless, it takes two minutes online. Ngl it seems like people want the convenience of digital banking but also want to keep getting physical statements for free, that's not really fair to the bank either.
