PSA: The 'no fun' budget mindset burns people out faster than overpaying for coffee

I keep seeing folks in here who treat budgeting like a strict diet where any little treat is a failure. But in my experience trimming my own spending over the last 3 years running my dog grooming shop, I've watched friends ditch their budgets completely because they felt so deprived. For example, my neighbor Karen set a $0 eating out rule last January and by March she was blowing $200 a month on takeout because she cracked. I think the real win is building in a small fun allowance, say $25 a week for whatever you want, guilt free. It kept me on track when I was saving for a new dryer, and I actually stuck with it for 18 months straight. So which side do you fall on - strict austerity or flexible budgeting with room for little splurges? Has anyone else seen the strict approach backfire?

Has anyone factored in how a strict budget can actually mess with your social life and relationships? When you're always saying no to grabbing a coffee with a friend or skipping a group dinner, people stop inviting you out. Then you're not just broke, you're lonely and still stressing about money.

Wait Karen set a $0 eating out rule from the start? That's like trying to quit sugar cold turkey and not even allowing a single piece of candy for emergencies. No wonder she cracked hard, that level of restriction was basically setting herself up to fail from day one.
