Paid $35 for a Costco membership just for gas, and the math shocked me

I drive 40 miles a day for work so I figured the membership would pay for itself in a month, but after 6 weeks I'm saving around $22 a month on gas which barely covers the fee. Am I missing something or is the Costco gas hype overblown for anyone else?
