My old washing machine finally died after 18 years

Our Whirlpool from 2006 finally gave up the ghost last Saturday. The drum started making this grinding noise during the spin cycle and then just stopped. I called a repair guy who said the motor and control board were both shot, and parts alone would be $400. Instead of fixing it, I found a basic top loader on Facebook Marketplace for $80 from a lady who was moving. It's 10 years old but runs perfectly, and I figure I saved about $600 compared to buying new. Has anyone else had luck with used appliances from marketplace or craigslist?

$80 for a 10 year old machine that could die any day seems like rolling the dice.

Rolling the dice" is a fair point, but I see it differently. I paid $40 for a 10 year old Kenmore washer back in 2018 and it's still running strong today. Sometimes those older machines are built way tougher than the new plastic stuff. Plus if it breaks in two years, I still got two years of use for $80, which is cheaper than renting a machine or buying new. And honestly, I'd rather fix an old one with simple parts than deal with a new machine that has circuit boards and error codes.
