My neighbor saw my grocery haul and asked if I was feeding an army...
I was carrying in my $120 worth of bulk buys from Costco and she just shook her head, saying she spends half that by shopping sales at Kroger and using a cash envelope for food. I've always thought bulk was cheaper, but her comment made me actually look at my receipts from the past six months. Has anyone else switched from warehouse clubs back to regular stores and saved real money?

Honestly this is such a common trap with bulk stores. You go in for the cheap rotisserie chicken and toilet paper but walk out with a giant tub of artichoke dip and a new air fryer. The psychology of those places is designed to make you spend more than you planned. Comparing unit prices is key, and for a lot of staples, regular grocery sales really do beat the bulk price.

I read a study once that said the average Costco shopper spends over a hundred dollars per trip, way more than they plan. You're right, jamienguyen, the whole layout is a trick to get you past the giant TVs and seasonal stuff. My wife has a strict list now because we ended up with a twelve pack of pickleball paddles we still haven't opened. It feels like a good deal until you do the math on how much mustard one family really needs.
