Am I the only one who lost $400 on a gym membership I never used?

I signed up for a two-year contract at a fancy gym downtown because they gave me a 'deal' and I thought it would make me go. I went maybe three times total. On the other side, some people say paying upfront is the push they need. Has anyone else wasted cash on a subscription they forgot about?

So did you try to cancel before the annual fee date, or did they just hit you with it out of the blue? Their billing system seems designed to catch people off guard. It's a really common trap.

My old Planet Fitness black card charged me for a full year after I moved across town.

That's actually the Planet Fitness policy. The black card annual fee hits every year on the sign up date, no matter if you switch locations. It's not tied to a specific gym. You have to cancel the whole membership to stop it, just moving won't do it. They don't make that super clear when you sign up. I had to argue with them for a month to get a refund.
