Trying to find a hostel bed in Prague during a festival took me 4 hours of checking every site I could find.

What's your go-to method for last-minute bookings when everything seems sold out?

Ever try calling places directly instead of just looking online? I had that happen in Barcelona once, and I ended up just walking into a few hostels to ask at the front desk. Sometimes they hold back a bed or two that isn't listed on the booking sites. Also, check smaller local sites instead of just the big global ones. I found a spot in Rome on a site I'd never heard of before. It takes more legwork but it can save you.

Totally agree with @christopher713. Read a travel blog that said some hotels keep rooms off the big sites to avoid fees. Makes sense to call around.

Isn't that just too much work for most trips? @christopher713, I find the big sites show enough options if you're flexible on location. The time spent calling around is rarely worth the small chance of a hidden deal.
