That line about nearly turning you into a hostel snob is funny because I went the other way. A cheap place that bad can make you swear off hostels forever, not turn you into someone who only wants nice ones. If the $9 spot scared you off the cheap stuff, that is not being a snob, that is just common sense kicking in.
