The $6 Greyhound trick that used to get me across the state, now it's gone

Back in 2015 I would book a Greyhound from Cleveland to Pittsburgh for like $9 if I bought it 2 weeks out. The trick was picking the 4 AM bus, those never sold out and the app gave an extra dollar off for weird times. Then around 2019 they changed the whole pricing system, now the same route shows $34 minimum even on Tuesday mornings. I get it, fuel and driver pay went up, but it feels like the whole budget bus scene collapsed overnight. The station in downtown Cleveland used to have this old ticket guy who'd wave you through if you showed a student ID from any school, he retired in 2018. Has anyone else seen their local budget bus routes basically double in price for no real service upgrade?

That old ticket guy waving people through sounds like the last piece of the old system. Do you think the pricing change was more about killing off the people who gamed the system than actual costs, or did the company just realize they could squeeze more out of every route? Curious if you've checked the price for a Tuesday 4 AM bus recently, like this month, because I've seen some weird surge pricing on those off hours now too.
