Rant: I had to pick between a cheap hotel in Miami or a hostel dorm

Last month, I found a hotel for $85 a night, but a hostel bed was $30. I took the hostel, saved over $100, and actually met people to split a rental car with. What's the cheapest you've ever slept somewhere decent?

The real win is when cheap sleep leads to cheaper everything else. Splitting that rental car probably saved you more than the hotel cost. That's the hidden math of hostels.

Count my blessings I didn't pick the hotel. That hostel snoring chorus was brutal, but the free instant coffee and a guy named Lars who knew a parking hack for South Beach made it worth it. Honestly, the weird stories from those shared kitchens beat a lonely hotel room any day. My cheapest decent sleep was a $20 bunk in Lisbon where the window didn't close but the owner's mom made everyone pancakes.
