Paid $38 for a "skip the line" pass that saved me 10 minutes in Rome

I grabbed that priority entry ticket for the Colosseum last month thinking I'd dodge a 2 hour wait, but the regular line moved faster because their scanner kept glitching on the QR codes. Ended up standing behind a family who argued with the guard for 8 minutes about a misprinted voucher while I watched the free line stream past. Has anyone else paid extra for a shortcut that backfired on them in a tourist spot, or did I just pick the one broken operation?

Booked the same thing for the Vatican Museums a couple years back and got burned in a different way. The "skip the line" crew met us across the street from the entrance, which meant we still had to walk over and push through the same security crowd as everyone else. Took us 40 minutes just to find the guy holding the sign, and by then the regular line had shrunk down to nothing. My rule now is to check the actual entry time slots on the official site first, because a lot of these passes just sell you a reserved time that the normal ticket already comes with. If the site lets you pick a 9am slot for the standard price, you don't need the middleman at all. Only pay extra when it's a real guided tour with a person walking you through, not some QR code hustle.
