My hostel booking hack saved me $120 on a trip to Lisbon
I was booking a dorm bed in Lisbon for 5 nights and noticed the price jumped $30 if I booked through the hostel's own website vs Hostelworld (weird, right?). Turns out they add a "concierge fee" for direct bookings that covers stuff like late check-in and luggage storage, which I totally don't need. Has anyone else caught a similar markup on direct bookings vs third party sites?

My buddy booked a hostel in Barcelona direct and they tacked on a "reservation fee" that doubled the price. He just canceled and rebooked on Booking.com for half the cost.

Buddy's a champ for catching that. That reservation fee nonsense is pure robbery. Most of us just book without looking at the fine print. I once paid triple for a hostel in Rome because I didn't read the "tax" part. Thought I was being smart by booking direct. Joke's on me, I guess. These places know we're just trying to save a buck.
