Just saved $60 on my weekend trip by switching from hotels to hostels

I used to book hotels for every trip even if it was just a quick overnight stay, but last month I finally tried a hostel in Portland for $35 a night instead of my usual $95 motel. The hostel had a free breakfast and a kitchen to cook my own dinner, so I didn't blow money on restaurant meals either. Have you guys found other small switches like this that add up fast?

My buddy Mark switched to hostels last year and now he won't shut up about it. He stayed at one in Seattle that had a community pasta night every Wednesday where everyone chips in $3 for ingredients. He said he met like 15 people from different countries just passing around a jar of sauce.

Hostels aren't for everyone though, I'd rather just pay extra for a quiet room than deal with snoring strangers and shared bathrooms.
