Just crossed 50 nights in hostels this year and realized I paid less for accommodation than my buddy's car insurance

I added it up last night after booking my 51st night in a Bangkok dorm and my total came to $1,275 for the whole year, which is wild considering my friend back in Ohio pays $180 a month just to park his truck in his driveway, has anyone else run the numbers on their lodging spending and been shocked?

$1,275 for 50 nights is insane lol. I'm sitting here doing math in my head and my buddy pays more than that in 6 months for just his car insurance in New Jersey. But here's something nobody brings up - you're probably saving way more than just rent money. Think about it, if you're bouncing around hostels you're not paying for utilities, internet, furniture, or all that random crap you collect when you have a lease. My cousin spent $400 on curtains last year for his apartment. Curtains lol. Plus when your living space is a bed and a locker you don't buy all those "home improvement" things that somehow cost as much as a flight to Thailand. The real savings are in the stuff you never buy.

One thing I learned the hard way is to set up automatic bill payments for any subscriptions you still have back home. People forget about Netflix, Spotify, or a gym membership and then get hit with late fees months later. Also, get a virtual mailbox service if you're moving around a lot. It keeps your mail safe and you can have someone scan important stuff like tax forms or bank statements. Most hostels don't have a secure place for packages either, so have anything shipped to a friend's house. And always keep a copy of your passport on your phone plus a physical backup in a separate bag. Saves a ton of headache if something gets lost.
