Just compared booking a flight through a big site versus a small airline's own page

I needed a ticket from Denver to Phoenix for a weekend trip. The big travel site showed $198, but I checked the airline's own website and found the same flight for $162. The difference was a $36 'service fee' the big site added at the end. I almost didn't check because I thought the prices would match. Has anyone else found a better deal by skipping the middleman lately?

Ugh, that service fee is such a scam. I always check the airline site directly now, even after I see a price on a big site. Those third parties add fees and make it way harder to change your ticket if something goes wrong. The airline will actually help you if your flight gets canceled, but the booking site will just leave you on hold forever. Saving that cash is worth the extra minute to open a new tab.

Wow, a $36 fee just for clicking buttons?

That's more than I spend on lunch for the whole week.
