I used to think hostels were just for college kids until I stayed at one in Lisbon

My hotel in Lisbon cost $120 a night, but the hostel down the street was $35. I switched for my last two nights and got a private room. The hostel had free walking tours and a kitchen, so I saved on food and activities. Anyone know other cities where hostels are a solid deal for solo travelers over 30?

Wait, $35 for a private room in Lisbon? That's insane, I would have thought it was at least double that. Wyatt_shah85 is right about Prague being good for this too, but hearing that price makes me wonder what I've been paying for. I stayed in a hotel in Barcelona last fall and it was like $180 a night for a basic room with no kitchen. Next time I'm just gonna look for a hostel first, even if it feels weird being older. The free tours and kitchen access would have saved me so much money on tapas and guidebooks.

What about checking out Prague? The hostels there are pretty nice and you can get a private room without the hotel price tag.

Prague's hostel scene is legit, especially around Zizkov. I stayed at one called The Madhouse last year and the private rooms were basically small apartments with a kitchenette. You can walk to most of the main sights from that area and avoid the tourist trap prices in Old Town. Just be ready for a lot of stairs in those older buildings.
