I finally stopped booking hostels after talking to a hostel owner

Met a guy who runs a hostel in Berlin last month. He told me straight up that even budget hostels are marking up dorm beds 30% during peak season because they know people will pay for social vibes. Said I could save $15-20 a night just booking a private room in a cheaper guesthouse nearby. I checked the numbers for my Spain trip and he was right. Has anyone else noticed hostel prices creeping up to hotel levels in certain cities?

Man, hostels basically turned into hotels that make you make your own bed.

I always book the private rooms in hostels now, it's a game changer. Way cheaper than a hotel but you still get your own space. Plus you can usually find ones with en suite bathrooms if you dig around on Hostelworld. Just pack a pair of flip flops for the shared showers anyway.
