I finally learned why hostel dorms got way more expensive in the last 5 years

Used to pay like $15 a night in Berlin back in 2017 now it's $40 for the same bunk. I think it's all the influencer travel stuff and people booking whole rooms. Has anyone else noticed prices jumping like that in other cities?

Budapest went from 8 euros a night in 2018 to like 25 now for the same 8 bed room... I run a small roofing company and even the guys who travel for work tell me hostels are getting crazy. I think it's the whole digital nomad thing where people stay in them for months at a time instead of just a few days. They book up entire dorms and the prices just keep climbing because there's less beds open for regular travelers. Real shame because places like Berlin and Prague used to be dirt cheap and now you gotta budget like you're staying in a hotel.

Not sure I buy that digital nomads are the real problem there. Hostels in popular cities were always going to catch up to market rates once travel bounced back, right?
