Hotel front desk clerk mentioned they discount rooms after 9pm
I was checking into a hotel in St. Louis last month around 8:30. The clerk told me if I waited 30 minutes I could get the room for $75 instead of $119. So I killed time at the bar next door and came back. Saved $44 just because I asked what time their rates change. Has anyone else tried negotiating room prices right before late night?

Oh wow that's a great tip! I did something similar at a motel in Nashville. Waited till 10pm and asked if they had any late night deals. Got the room for $60 instead of $95. Just gotta be nice and ask.

My buddy Dan pulled this off in Chicago last year. Got to the hotel around 10:15, they were about to shut down the desk for the night. Clerk offered him $68 for a room that was listed at $130 online. He didn't even ask, they just offered it. @janab82 you're right about being nice, Dan said he just chatted with the guy for a minute and that was it. I tried doing the same thing in Seattle a few months ago, but that clerk just stared at me and said "rates are rates." So it really depends on the person working the desk.
