Hostels with free walking tours saved me $200 in London last month

I was skeptical about the free walking tours hostels offer because I figured they'd just be sales pitches for overpriced excursions. But I stayed at a place near King's Cross and the guide was a local historian who knew all the shortcuts and free museum days. Ended up doing three tours and never paid more than a tip. Has anyone else found these actually worth the time or did I just get lucky?

Free walking tours are usually a waste of time if you've done any research on your own. Those guides steer you right to the gift shops and cafes they get kickbacks from. You probably just got a rare good one.

@emery_taylor sounds like they got burned by a walking tour that ended at a souvenir shop lmao. For real tho, the trick is finding hostels that partner with actual local guides not just marketing people in walking shoes.
