Hostels used to scare me, now I book them over hotels 9 times out of 10

For years I was the person who needed a private room with a door that locked and my own bathroom. Paid $140 a night in Denver last spring for a mediocre hotel and barely slept anyway. Then a friend convinced me to try a hostel in Lisbon for 3 nights, $28 a night. I figured I'd hate it. Turns out the bunk beds were fine, the lockers worked, and I met like 5 people who wanted to do the same sights. Now I look for hostels with good common areas first. The money I save goes straight into food and activities. Has anyone else had that switch flip where they realized private space was overrated?

Whoa, wait... $140 a night in Denver for a hotel that was just "mediocre"? That's insane. I mean, I know Denver got pricey, but that's still a kick in the teeth. I did the same thing a few years ago, paying stupid money for a private room in San Diego and I still didn't sleep because of the street noise outside. Now I'm the opposite, honestly... I almost get annoyed when a hostel costs more than $40. The bunk beds are never as bad as people think, especially when you're so tired from walking around all day that you could sleep on a park bench.
