Hostel vs guesthouse choice in Medellin saved me $50 a night

I was planning a week in Colombia last spring and got stuck deciding between a party hostel for $22 a night or a private guesthouse for $70. I went with the hostel because I wanted to save money for a weekend trip to the coffee region. Turned out the hostel had a decent kitchen and a quiet rooftop, so I cooked my own meals and skipped expensive dinners out. Has anyone else found that picking the cheaper option actually gave them more spending money for other experiences?
