Hostel booking sites vs walking in, the difference was huge in Prague

I spent 3 nights at a place booked online for 28 euros a night, then wandered into a hostel two blocks away and got a private room for 15 euros cash... same neighborhood, better wifi, no booking fee. The online places markup like crazy to cover their commission, while walk-ins get the real price. Anyone else try skipping the apps and just knocking on doors in a new city?

Same in most cities, apps always add a middleman tax to everything.
