Found $0.50 hostels through university exchange programs

Was planning a trip to Kyoto and found a dorm room for $7 a night through a Japanese university's international student housing. Never would have known about it if I hadn't asked a friend studying abroad there. Has anyone else bunked in student dorms abroad?

Is the liability a nightmare if something gets stolen?

Oh man, @coleman.seth, that was my biggest worry too. I had a $2,000 bike lock set up and still had someone cut through the chain lock on my back porch last summer. They got away with a beat up old lawnmower and a box of tools, and the insurance claim was a pain. The adjuster tried to argue it wasn't secured properly because I didn't have a camera pointed right at the spot. My deductible was $500, and they only covered half because it wasn't in a locked garage. Your mileage may vary, but I'd say factor in a good camera system and maybe a cheaper storage shed if you can swing it.
