DAE realize hostel dorm beds are a trap after doing the math on a $4 bus ride in Portugal?
I was in Lisbon last month, sitting in a park near Rossio Square, when I pulled out my phone and actually added up what I was spending. I had booked a 6 bed dorm for 28 euros a night, which sounded cheap until I counted the earplugs, the lock for the locker, the late night snack runs because I could not sleep, and the coffee I kept buying since the kitchen was always full. Then a guy from Brazil told me he was paying 15 euros a night for a private room in a town 40 minutes away by train, and the ticket was only 4 euros round trip. I ran the numbers right there and my dorm was costing me almost double once you add everything up. The next morning I switched to a guesthouse in Almada, slept 9 hours straight, and still came out ahead by like 60 euros over four days. It made me rethink every hostel booking I have ever made. Has anyone else ditched dorms entirely and just commuted in from a cheaper town instead?
